Client: European Engineering Company
Equipment: Submersible aerators
Challenge: Specification mismatch between European and Chinese markets
The problem
The client needed high-power submersible aerators (30kW, 45kW, 60kW) to match their existing European equipment specifications. Online research showed multiple Chinese suppliers listing these models on their websites. However:
- Some suppliers didn’t respond to inquiries.
- Others quoted prices 2x to 3x higher than expected.
- No clear explanation why.
This left the client confused and concerned about supply chain reliability.
How we uncovered the issue
Instead of forwarding inquiries blindly, we called each factory directly to verify their actual production capacity.
In this sourcing exercise, the active production range we identified reached 22kW. Larger models appeared in catalogs and on websites, but the factories contacted did not routinely manufacture them because of limited domestic demand.
Suppliers either ignored inquiries for non-standard models or quoted custom-build prices, explaining the higher cost.
Our solution
Immediate transparency: Informed the client of the market reality within 24 hours, instead of letting them chase quotes for weeks.
Technical alternative: Proposed redesigning the aeration system using multiple 22kW units to achieve the same oxygen transfer rate, based on their tank geometry and flow rates.
Supplier verification: Identified a manufacturer through:
- On-site factory inspection
- Quality system review
- Technical documentation capability check
- Delivery track record verification
- Price competitiveness analysis
Result
- Client procured 2 × 22kW submersible aerators.
- System redesign completed in 1 week, instead of weeks of dead-end supplier chasing.
- Equipment delivered on schedule.
Client feedback: “Finally someone who tells us the truth.”
Key insight
The biggest risk is not always product quality. Sometimes it is wasting time on specifications that are listed but not available in routine production. Honest, early-stage communication saves time and cost.
What this shows about our process
- Direct factory communication, including phone calls rather than email alone.
- Knowledge of what is actually produced versus what is listed.
- Technical problem-solving and practical alternative configurations.
- Honest advice, even when it means adjusting expectations.
